DINNER

"Are you sure about this?" a lady asked.

"Yes, Mom, I am," Karthik replied.

"But it's a lifetime decision, Karthik. Think again," his Dad cautioned.

"Mom, Dad, I've given this a lot of thought. I'm not rushing into anything," Karthik assured them. "I don't understand what the problem is."

"See, Karthik, we're your parents and we want what's best for you. We're worried about you, that's all," Saraswati, his mother, explained.

"And we don't want you to regret it later," his father added.

"Naina won't be a good partner for you," his father stated firmly.

"Mom, Dad, I'm not a child. I know what's good and what's not," Karthik retorted, his voice slightly raised.

Karthik's P.O.V.

Here I was, having dinner with my parents, and the topic of my marriage came up. I asked them to talk to Naina's parents. Naina and I have been together for a year, but we've known each other since college. We grew up in the same social circle and went on a blind date set up by mutual friends. We both felt a connection and decided to date. Our parents know each other, and I think Naina is perfect for me. I don't have time for relationship drama. There is no love in our relationship it is formed just for mutual interests.

She understands me completely and doesn't care about me not being romantic. She's rich, and grew up in the same circle so mingling in my society won't be an issue. I believe this marriage will benefit my career. That's the problem, isn't it? I don't love her. My parents worry that a loveless marriage won't work, "And they're right." Said my subconscious mind. I ignored it.

They don't approve of her, and I don't know why.

This is my life, my decision. Just because it's practical and beneficial doesn't mean there's no love involved. I've never understood the concept of love. People talk about the beauty of love, but I've never experienced it. However, I do believe in trust and respect, and we have that in our relationship.

My thoughts were interrupted by my mother's phone ringing. She smiled at the caller ID and answered, "Yes, sweety, yes, we're coming." She nodded to something and chuckled, "Okay, I'll be there an hour before the event starts. See you soon." Then she turned to my dad.

"It was Preesha," Dad smiled, remembering the name. "She was asking when we're leaving," Mom explained.

"Let's go," Dad said, nodding towards the door. The couple got up and started walking towards the door, leaving me confused.

"Such a sweet girl," Mom sighed. "I wish I had a daughter like her. I wish you had chosen someone like Preesha."

"Why not Preesha herself? " I asked feeling annoyed, I continued"Make her your Bahu".

"I wish but to my bad luck , I can't. First, She's already getting engaged today, and second, she considers Arjun as her brother. You, on the other hand, have a so-called girlfriend,so i can't make her my bahu" Mom added dramatically.

Half an hour later, they were all dressed up and ready to go.

"Karthik," Mom started, but I cut her off. "Mom, I'm not going anywhere," I said. She chuckled and replied, "I wasn't going to ask you to come. I was just going to remind you to lock the door before going to bed." My face fell at her savage reply.
